Up & Over Garage Door Repairs
Up & over door are the most common type of garage door and also the most common type to fail. The most frequent thing to break on an up & over door is the cables. We’re regularly replacing cables on up and over doors and we make them up from a reel specifically to suit your door. Other common parts that need replacing or repairing are springs, rollers and handles. We carry many parts for these doors on our vans so can often repair same day.
Roller Garage Door Repairs
When roller garage doors go wrong often they’re not operational at all which can be a real pain. One of the most common faults is that the locking springs break. These are the components that join the door curtain to the axle. We carry locking springs in stock that fit the doors of most manufactures to get you back up and running as soon as possible. Roller doors can also suffer from problems with the automation. Issues with the safety edges are not uncommon, if your door stops on the way down this could well be the problem. If your door is struggling to open this is most likely a motor issue. If this is the case do not use the door and phone us immediately. Roller doors with damaged motors are extremely dangerous and can come crashing down. If you are to continue to use the door the motor should be replaced ASAP.

Garage Side Doors Types
Historically, garage side doors have been timber; framed ledged and braced softwood. Usually they were outward opening so that the door could not protrude into the garage. This way of hanging it exacerbated the problems of a with a door of this construction. It was susceptible to the weather. Swelling and jamming in the winter and shrinking, warping and cracking in the summer. Many garage door manufacturers now produce matching garage side doors for their garage doors. These are mainly steel but may be hardwood to match similar garage doors. The steel versions may be single skin to match the up and over garage doors and insulated to match the insulated garage doors. Novoferm now do a hinged side door to match their Novorol insulated garage door.

Without realising, many people accumulate a lot of items in their garages over the years. Bicycles, powered lawn mowers, other power tools and hand tools are just a few of the items regularly found in garages. The security of the garage is often not considered. Thieves know this and often target garages which are an easy option. The garage side doors can be the vunerable point of the garage. Many of the garage side doors available now, especially the steel ones, have strong locking options. Up and over Garador garage doors
Up & over doors are at the heart of Garador. They have a state of the art manufacturing plant dedicated to these doors. Garador produces up and over garage doors in 4 different materials:
Steel – Steel is by far the most popular material for garage doors in general. Up and over Garador garage doors are made from galvanised steel then finished with a high quality powder coat paint. Steel doors are available in a large choice of designs, both contemporary and traditional. Doors come white as standard but are available in a range of colours.
Timber – Nothing compares to the beauty of natural wood. Garador timber up and over doors are made from cedar wood and built on to a ridged steel chassis. This makes a product with the traditional beauty of wood but the ease of operation of a modern door. Cedar wood is an excellent timber from which to manufacture garage doors. It is light in weight and highly resistant to rotting.
GRP – GRP is short for glass reinforced plastic but is often referred to as fibreglass. GRP up and over garage doors solve a problem for people who live in close proximity to the coast. People may like the look of timber look of many of the GRP doors. There is none of the maintenance hassle that is required with timber garage doors.
PVC – PVC up and over Garador garage doors offer a cost effective alternative to GRP doors. They are a great match for PVC windows. Unfortunately; with Garador PVC garage doors there is a limited range of designs and sizes.
Types of operation – Up and over Garador garage doors come with two choices of operation: canopy or retractable. Canopy doors have tracks down the side of the door and a spring along the head rail. When the door is fully open, approximately 1/3 of the door remains outside of the garage forming a ‘canopy’. Canopy garage doors are not suitable for automatic operation. Garador retractable doors have horizontal tracks extending into the garage and vertical springs behind the frame legs. When the door is fully open the edge of the door leaf sits flush with the front of the frame. Retractable Garador garage doors are suitable for automatic operation.

Sectional Garador garage doors
These doors are industry leading. A high level of quality control is used during manufacture. Sectional Garador garage doors are made up of panels or ‘sections’ These sections rise vertically then glide back into the garage horizontally to completely clear the opening. This type of operation has numerous advantages:
- It is possible to park a vehicle close to the door.
- When opening, the door does not swing out.
- A sectional door can give full opening height and width.
- There are no restrictions from lifting arms, handles etc. as you get with an up and over door.
Sectional Garador garage doors are available as un-insulated or 42 mm thick insulated. Un-insulated doors are made from single skin steel with bracing on the back. Insulated doors are made from a double steel skin construction with a CFC free foam core. Insulated doors are far stronger, more ridged and give a much quieter operation than the single skin doors. Garador sectional doors come in Georgian panel and linear designs to suit both modern and traditional homes The Linear Medium is the most popular design and we have one of these in our Lancashire showroom.
Side hinged Garador garage doors
Side hinged doors are a great alternative to up and over garage doors for garages not used for cars. Ideal if the garage is used as a workshop of storeroom. These doors provide quick and easy access. Side hinged Garador garage doors are available in steel and timber. They can have either a half and half or a two thirds one third split. Many of the up and over designs are available as side hinged and come with the same quality powder coated finish. We always provide Garador side hinged doors with door stays. These prevent the door leaves being strained by the wind when open.
Garador garage door operators
Garador’s range of operators are perfectly suited and tested to work in harmony with Garador garage doors. The latest generation of Garador operators comes with Bi-Secur technology. This allows you to query the door remotely and check whether it is open or closed. There are 3 models available; Garamatic 9, Garamatic 10 and Garamatic 20. Garamatic 9 is our most popular operator and is suitable for most doors, it has a peak force of 750 N, a soft start and soft stop, a courtesy light and automatic safety reversal. Garamatic 10 and 20 are essentially the same operator. The 10 has a peak force of 800 N, the 20 1000 N. This makes the 20 suitable for very heavy garage doors. As well as the features included with the Garamatic 9, the 10 & 20 also come with a handset which has the Bi-Secur query feature, (this is sold as an upgrade with Garamatic 9). They have high speed operation and a half open function for ventilation. There are other features also. All Garamatic operators have an emergency release function in case of a power failure.
Garador Front Doors
Garador’s FrontGuard range of entrance doors are steel leaf doors with an aluminium frame. They are one of our most popular products at Lakes as they give such a great look and performance. The range includes both contemporary and traditional designs to suit any taste. On selected models they are available with the ‘Secured by Design’ stamp. This proves that the doors have been tested and accredited to the Secured by Design security level.

Construction
Garador front doors are manufactured to ISO 9001. They have also been tested for water tightness under heavy rain, thermal and acoustic insulation, and draughts under heavy winds. The door frame is made from aluminium with a multi chamber system which eliminates thermal bridges for good thermal efficiency. The door leaf is 46mm thick made from double skin steel with a solid urethane foam core. These doors offer excellent insulation values and security.
Insulation
With rising energy costs, thermal efficiency has become more and more important to consumers. Garador front doors are available with a thermal transmittance as low as U=1.2 W/m2K. This can make a big difference to the temperature inside the house as well as giving you a saving on your bills.
Security
Security is often a primary concern when choosing a front door and the FrontGuard does not disappoint here. It includes a double throw locking rod and swing bolts as wells as 3 hinge pins as standard. A Secure by Design optional upgrade is also available on certain models. The upgrade includes a high security cylinder and flag type hinges.
Glazing and side elements
Many of the Garador front doors come with glazing. Different glazing designs are available with different doors. In addition to this, side elements are also an option. They will come in a matching style to the door.
Colours and finishes
Garador front doors come as standard in traffic white. There is also a range of 11 RAL colours to choose from and 3 
foil laminate options; golden oak, dark oak and the very popular Titan Metallic effect.

Not solid wood
Silvelox front doors are not made from solid wood they are built upon the Silvelox Omega steel core and have a steel frame which is then faced with wood. Why is this better? Because the steel offers a higher level of security than wood and your front door will never twist or warp.
Silvelox Front Doors – Design
The choice of design with Silvelox front doors is almost limitless. The large range of designs both contemporary and traditional can be customised with colour options and door furniture. If none of the standard designs suit, it is possible to have your own bespoke design. We will work with you and/or your architect to make sure you get the perfect door for you.
Matching internal doors & garage doors

Insulation
So much heat can be lost through a draughty or poorly insulated front doors. Silvelox doors are highly insulating with wood faces inside and out as well as an insulated core. With optional insulation packages Silvelox doors are suitable for low energy houses.

Roller Insulated Garage Doors
Insulated roller garage doors are made from foam filled aluminium slats which hinge together and roll up into a coil. A typical slat would be around 15mm thick. Insulated roller doors have brush strips in the guides and a rubber seal along the bottom slat however because of how a roller door works it is not possible to get a tight seal at the top of the door. A roller door will give much better insulation values than an un-insulated door but is the least insulating of the doors mentioned on this page. A typical installed insulated roller door will give a thermal transmittance of U=4.0W/m2K

Sectional garage doors offer a very good level of insulation with panel thicknesses varying from 20mm-45mm. The panels are made from double skin steel with a foam core. These doors seal along the bottom, up the sides and along the top of the door with rubber seals. Generally sectional garage doors are made up of 4 sections with each section having a thermal break between it. These doors can be fitted either between or behind the structural opening but will give better insulation when fitted behind. A typical installed 40mm insulated sectional garage door will give a thermal transmittance of U=1.5W/m2K

Up and over hardwood garage doors – depending on size, up and over garage doors can be made from almost any species of hardwood. The panel can be made from solid timber and hung on Arcadian lifting gear or, our preferred choice, the Novoferm OFI Magnum. OFI stands for Open for Infill which is a pre-framed open steel chassis ready to accept the infill of your choice. This creates a much stiffer and robust door leaf than a solid timber leaf. Sectional Hardwood Garage Doors – Novoferm offer their ISO45 sectional door in African okoume. There is a range of designs available as well as the option to have your own bespoke design. The advantage with this type when compared to the up and over door is that the door seals all around, and is more secure than an up and over. Cedar Wooden Garage Doors
Cedar is by far the most common material to make wooden garage doors from, it is a very rich looking timber and is often described as being ‘multi-coloured’. What makes cedar so good for timber garage doors are that it is very lightweight, is highly resistive to rotting and very stable. The disadvantage is that cedar is softness. Manual doors especially can get damaged over time by knocks and scrapes. Cedar is often used as cladding on buildings. A matching garage door can blend in well. Oak Wooden Garage Doors
Oak is at present a very popular timber to use on the exterior of homes as cladding and as front doors and, as a consequence, is becoming requested more often for wooden garage doors. Oak is a wood which is hard, heavy and expensive. It has the potential to expand and contract more than other timbers making so is not the obvious choice for making timber garage doors. Despite this, oak garage doors are available made either as bespoke up & over garage doors using the Novoferm Magnum OFI door. In our Silvelox range of wooden garage doors oak is available as one of the timber choices. Silvelox garage doors are made up of 75mm thick laminated Multi-ecowood with just the top layer being oak. Idigbo Wooden Garage Doors
Idigbo is similar to oak in appearance and colour but is much lighter in weight and cheaper in cost. This makes idigbo more suitable for making up & over garage doors from than oak. Idigbo wooden garage doors are available as up & over garage doors and side hinged garage doors.
Okoume Wooden Garage Doors
Okoume is an African hardwood and is used as standard for Silvelox garage doors. It is a red/brown colour in appearance and is very hard wearing and knot free. Okoume is also available as an upgrade from northern spruce in the timber Novoferm sectional garage doors.
Softwood Wooden Garage Doors
The term ‘softwood’ is used to cover many species of timber but is generally referring to lower grades of timber. Softwood garage doors usually have a lot of knots. It is important to specify kiln dried softwood. Unlike hardwoods and cedar, softwood rots easily. It is very important to keep on top of the maintenance of softwood garage doors. The advantage that softwood has over all other species of wooden garage doors mentioned on this page is that it cheaper. Softwood timber garage doors are available as sectional garage doors and side hinged garage doors.
Hardwood Wooden Garage Doors
Three of the species mentioned above – oak, okoume and idigbo are all hardwoods but when people use the term ‘hardwood they are usually referring to far eastern red hardwoods such as sapele, iroko or mahogany. All have a similar appearance. None of the far eastern hardwood are used as standard in garage door manufacture. Silvelox oak garage doors – Silvelox garage doors are made up of laminated Multi-ecowood. Only the top layer is oak. You can also choose from a variety of other woods. This a much more stable product than a solid oak garage door. Due to the type of construction, choosing oak in the Silvelox range does not restrict at all the size or design. This makes Silvelox garage doors our preferred choice for oak garage doors.
Silverlox Overlap
The Silvelox garage door that we supply is the Overlap which is a trackless sectional garage door . There are no unsightly ceiling tracks intruding into the garage roof space that are associated with traditional sectional garage doors. Overlap is also superior to all other types of garage door in terms of insulation and choice of designs. There are 12 standard designs to choose from, all available in oak and the option to have your own bespoke design.
Oak side hinged garage doors – as oak side hinged garage doors do not need to be balanced like other types of garage door e.g. up & over, oak is as suitable as any other timber to make side hinged garage doors. Oak side hinged garage doors can be made in a wide range of styles and heights. However, as with all side hinged garage doors, the restriction is on width. It is not practical to make side hinged garage doors more than 8’ wide. It can overly stress the hinges and joints. Also, even with door stays, the leaves can be vulnerable to being caught by the wind. This applies to all side hinged garage doors and not just oak.
Oak up & over garage doors – up and over garage doors in oak are our most frequently requested type of oak garage door. As such specialist timber door manufacturer Woodrite have recently created a small range of oak veneered doors with solid oak mouldings. These doors are traditionally styled and would look superb on any period home.
Novoferm OFI
If you are looking for something more contemporary the best way for this to be done is with an Open For Infill (OFI) type garage door such as the Novoferm OFI Magnum. An OFI comes as the chassis of a garage door leaf but with no panel. The panel can be made however you wish. You can arrange this or we can use one of our preferred joinery manufacturers.
The weight of oak
What restricts oak up and over garage doors is the maximum weight they can carry. The use of an OFI keeps the overall weight much lower than with solid oak garage doors. It can be difficult to strike a balance between using oak boards that are thick enough not to curl or warp whilst not exceeding the maximum infill weight of the door. This can affect the styles which can be used, though this is generally only an issue on larger doors. We recommend using the Novoferm Novomatic 803 S garage door operator with oak up and over garage doors.

]]>Most UK front doors have not been tested and certified for a level of security. For a professional burglar it maybe all too easy to gain access through. At Lakes Garage Doors we offer Garador and Silvelox front doors in a range of security levels to suit the needs of various types of properties.
Many of the doors in our range of Garador front doors are available are available with a Secured by Design upgrade or an RC 2 upgrade. Secured by Design is owned by Association of Chief Police Officers who award this status to products passing their testing procedures. The upgrade consists of a high security cylinder, a safety registration card and three security keys. This is the minimum standard of security recommended by the Association of Chief Police Officers. The Garador Secured by Design upgrade is not available on doors with side elements.
RC Front Door Security
RC stands for Burglar Resistance Class and this is the European standard used for measuring front door security. This replaces the old WC standard. The scale goes from RC 1-6 with 6 being the highest. There are no domestic door that achieve Classes 5 or 6 as it is not necessary or practical. An RC 6 door would weigh at least 500 kg!
Our Silvelox front doors have either Class 2, Class 3 or Class 4 security. Silvelox entrance doors are made up of a galvanised steel body and then clad with wood. It is this solid core which makes Silvelox front doors so secure.
- Class Two – A good level of front door security. This door has been tested against physical human strength along with tools such as screwdrivers, levers and wedges
- Three – This is the most popular level of security chosen of Silvelox front doors. It guarantees resistance to a sustained attack from a burglar using all tools in Class 2 plus large screwdrivers and crowbars
- Four – An extremely high level of front door security designed with withstand attacks from determined and professional burglars. The tools this type of entrance door is designed to endure attacks from include all tools from classes 2 & 3 plus drills,
saws, hatchets and hammers. This level of security is recommended for properties which are isolated where the burglar may also make lots of noise without being disturbed.
No matter which Silvelox security front door is chosen any sidelights are also made to the same security class.
