Modern home
A modern home may be anything built from the 1970s onwards and can vary in style. Many modern homes are eclectic in their use of cladding. 1920-1930 Art Deco

Victorian properties have distinct styles, favour high ceilings and ornate embellishments including bullion moulding. Tudor and Stuart Style
You may be lucky enough to live in a house that dates back to the 17thcentury. You may live in a 1900s arts and crafts style property that mimics that timber frames, clay rendering and sometimes thatched roofs. If your property includes outbuildings, you can convert these into a garage without the need for planning permission. However, if you wish to build a garage onto the side of the house, you will need to seek planning permission. For listed or period properties that exceed 200 years old you should choose timber garage doors. These will blend with the traditional style and materials used.

We often get requested by architects for custom design garage doors. Often called bespoke garage doors. First of all. it might be that the door is within a conservation area. In addition. it may need to be matched with an older design features. Sometimes a specific timber must be used which isn’t readily available. The door perhaps needs to tie in with other cladding elements on a new modern building. Or, just simply a non-standard colour which needs to be matched. In addition, it may be asked that the door is also high performing in terms of operation, security and insulation.
There are many products available which will address these criteria individually. For example, an OFI type up and over door can provide a cost effective solution. It can be clad with a material of your choice. However, they are not the most secure type of custom design garage doors and doesn’t give much insulation. Possibly, a pair of handmade side hinged doors can provide the ideal look for a period property.

It doesn’t require any tracks in the garage space – even the operator is built into the headrail. As well as a range of 12 standard designs, there is the option to create your own custom design.
We have shown here a picture of a panel in the Silvelox factory in Italy. The garage door was designed by Wilmslow architects, The Cave. See the case study all about this door. We had this panel made up of layers of okoume hardwood and veneered with oak. This custom, random width groove effect was created with a CNC router. The garage door was designed to match other features such as the cladding on the house. So, it can be seen that these make excellent custom design garage doors. Silvelox also manufacture matching high security front doors.
The Overlap doors are the best, automation is standard, they lock automatically. The U values, (a measure of the insulation), is better than most front doors. Also, they take up no space inside the garage.

Brief:
We are building a new and extremely modern house for a client. We will require an up and over garage door which we can clad on site to match in with the rest of the exterior cladding on the house and the front door. We must be able to clad the frame and the whole of the door so that from the outside the door looks like a solid timber garage door. The opening is large and we will require a door size of 4360mm x 2300mm. We will be cladding the door with horizontal oak boards so it must be able to cope with plenty of weight. The door will also need to be electrically operated.
Products used:
There are few garage doors available which will actually fulfil this brief but one is the Novoferm OFI Magnum. This is an up and over garage door and OFI stands for open for infill which means this door can be covered onsite (or offsite) with a material of your choice. The door can take up to 14kg per sq metre so is suitable for relatively heavy materials. The door chassis comes in either white or brown as standard and the frame has a galvanised finish. The electric operator that we used on this job was the powerful and reliable Novoferm Novomatic 553NRG.
